Football: Ten-man PSG humiliated at Lille, made to wait for title

LILLE, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Paris St Germain’s Ligue 1 title celebrations were delayed again when they suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat by second-placed Lille after being reduced to 10 men on Sunday (April 14).
The capital side, who would have clinched their eighth title by avoiding defeat, had Juan Bernat sent off before the break after the Spaniard had cancelled out Thomas Meunier’s early own goal.
The hosts made the most of their superiority after halftime with goals by Nicolas Pepe, Jonathan Bamba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jose Fonte, reducing the gap with the leaders to 17 points with six games remaining.
PSG, who already missed out on the opportunity of an early celebration when they drew at home to Racing Strasbourg last Sunday, will bag the title if they win their game in hand at Nantes on Wednesday.
It was PSG’s heaviest league defeat since Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) took over the club in 2011.
The game got off to an eventful start with Kylian Mbappe having two goals disallowed for offside in the first 15 minutes and PSG losing Thiago Silva to a muscle injury two weeks before the French Cup final against Stade Rennes.
Lille went ahead after Meunier diverted a Jonathan Ikone cross into his own goal in the seventh minute.  Four minutes later, Bernat volleyed home from Mbappe’s cross to equalise.
However, the Spanish full back was shown a straight red card shortly before the break when he brought down Pepe as the striker was rushing towards goal.
Christophe Galtier’s side went 2-1 up six minutes into the second half when Pepe beat the offside trap to score from close range.
Mbappe tormented the Lille defence but he was isolated up front and it was Lille who scored another, in the 65th when Bamba out-paced the defence and beat goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.  Magalhaes and Fonte sealed an emphatic win for Lille with a header each in the 72nd and 84th minutes, respectively.
Earlier, St Etienne moved up to fourth when Mathieu Debuchy’s double helped them thrash Girondins de Bordeaux 3-0 at home.  St Etienne have 53 points, three behind third-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.Â

Football: Spurs extend Vertonghen deal until 2020

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham have activated an option to extend defender Jan Vertonghen's contract at the Premier League club until 2020.
The Belgium defender, who is currently sidelined until January with a thigh injury, was due to see his deal expire at the end of the season.
But Spurs have moved to tie the 31-year-old down for an additional year and are believed to be keen to agree a new long-term deal.
A club statement read: "The club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend Jan Vertonghen's contract until 2020."
The 31-year-old joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012 and has been one of the key players in their rise to becoming an established top-four club.
He joins a long list of stars who have their immediate future tied up, with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Davinson Sanchez among those who have agreed new terms in recent months.

Top clubs unlikely to splash out in window

LONDON • Chelsea kicked off the English Premier League's January transfer window on Wednesday with the £58 million (S$100 million) signing of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund, but history has suggested that this is likely to be the exception for top clubs.
Loan signings are likely to dominate this transfer season, although this is also "the window for the desperate" for the relegation-threatened clubs, as one leading football agent terms it.
Only 37 of the 178 players leaving EPL clubs last January moved permanently and close to one in every three of the incoming signings in the top flight, a ratio that for the second successive year was twice as high as in the summer, joined on a temporary basis.
A year ago, unfinished business and acrimony from the preceding summer sparked off a domino effect, with Philippe Coutinho, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley finally getting their wish to leave.
This time round, it seems unlikely that clubs will match the record £431 million committed last year, with most of the top six teams indicating that they have no plans for big signings this month.
Manchester United will hold fire until they know the identity of their next permanent manager and might only sell fringe players.

  • Going somewhere?

  • DIVOCK ORIGI (LIVERPOOL)
The Belgian forward has barely played for the Reds this season, featuring in just two league games and a total of 72 minutes, although he did come off the bench to score a late winner in the 1-0 victory over Everton last month.
Besides his goal, he also provided an assist during the 3-1 win over Burnley.
Origi, who spent last season on loan in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, is reportedly frustrated at a lack of playing time at Anfield and is looking to move on. His suitors include the likes of Wolves, Celtic, Schalke and Lille.

  • AARON RAMSEY (ARSENAL)
Arsenal have decided to withdraw the new contract they had put on the table for the Welshman and he will be free to discuss terms with overseas clubs this month.
Juventus and German Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are rumoured to be interested, with reports saying the midfielder has already signed a pre-contract with the Italian champions.
Arsenal may also be tempted to cash in should they receive a substantial offer from a Premier League rival. Manager Unai Emery has insisted there is no prospect of reopening talks for a new deal but could change his mind should Mesut Ozil leave.

  • VICTOR MOSES (CHELSEA)
Moses is clearly not part of manager Maurizio Sarri's plans, having featured for a mere 28 minutes in the Premier League this season, and Chelsea are willing to let him leave.
Having signed a contract until 2021 last year, the Nigeria international is valued at £12 million (S$20.7 million) and a return to Crystal Palace, where he came through their academy, appears most likely.
Wolves and West Ham have also been linked, but the 28-year-old should be key to provide some much-needed support to Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park.
    THE GUARDIAN

Champions Manchester City have to play catch-up on leaders Liverpool and have looked vulnerable in the absence of Fernandinho recently. But Pep Guardiola emphasised there will be no spending: "This is the third time I answered that question. No news is good news, so no."
It could be a bluff. In the past two January windows, they have bought Aymeric Laporte for £57 million and, the previous year, Gabriel Jesus for £27 million.
With Tottenham needing to provide a sweetener for a manager attracting attention, there is an opportunity for judicious reinforcement. Whether Spurs sign anyone could be taken as a clue to the future of Mauricio Pochettino as manager beyond the end of the season.
Spurs are under pressure to act but, if they satisfy his wish to freshen up the dressing room, the arrivals may not be wanted by a new manager should he still leave.
City and Chelsea also face the possibility of a transfer ban over the signing of junior players, which could affect thinking.
In general, though, all clubs are mindful of the pitfalls of spending big money this month.
Chelsea's decision to commit £50 million to bring in Fernando Torres from Liverpool eight years ago turned out to be such an ill-advised move that it is still cited by those nervous about making big-money signings in January.
It looks likely to be a more traditional one in which teams near the bottom are most active but face the frustrations of buying in a seller's market. As one agent said: "It will be only those clubs who are desperate who try to deal, and the big clubs will act only if a player unexpectedly becomes available."
Another said that it was mainly second-tier players who are likely to be available and even struggling clubs may not take the plunge until the final days of the window.
The case may be different for clubs who feel they are in a false position and could push up the table with help. Crystal Palace are one, with chairman Steve Parish noting the problems of availability, affordability and the prospect of being taken advantage of.
"January is a pretty terrible window to get value," he said. "The deals are not there now.
"It is difficult if people know you need that player and there is no other solution."
A popular solution is loan deals.
Halfway through the season is normally short-term fix territory rather than a buyer's market, which partly explains the prevalence of loans.
Yet arguably the biggest factor is the sheer number of professionals that EPL clubs have on their books these days and the need to find regular first-team football for as many as possible while recouping a bit of money at the same time.
Some will be high-profile and out of favour - such as Jermain Defoe, who has just joined Rangers on loan from Bournemouth; Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne, who has signed for Eddie Howe's side until the end of the season; and Chelsea's Gary Cahill, who may join Fulham.
The majority, though, will be younger players who are some way off the first team and are, in the eyes of senior figures at their clubs, neither developing in a competitive environment by playing Under-23 football nor increasing their value.
Business has already been brisk this time around and, as the days tick by, it will be interesting to see what becomes of players such as Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin, Vincent Janssen at Spurs and Chelsea's Danny Drinkwater, all of whom cost a fair few quid and could do with a new home - temporary or otherwise - to revive their careers.

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

LONDON • Whoever said the magic of the FA Cup was dead should have paid a visit to Kingsmeadow, The Den and the New Meadow on Saturday.
While the competition has taken a backseat to the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years, it still represents the perfect opportunity for English football's lesser lights to have their day in the sun.
And shine they did as AFC Wimbledon and Millwall humbled their top-tier opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup in raucous post-game scenes at their respective home grounds.
Wimbledon revived memories of their "Crazy Gang" heyday in the late 80s, knocking West Ham out with a 4-2 win at Kingsmeadow.
The shock loss to Wimbledon, who are rock-bottom in League One, left Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini "ashamed" of his players.
He told reporters after his side went 3-0 down before the break: "Was I angry at half-time? Yes of course.
"I didn't expect it, the attitude, playing against a team that sits two divisions below us but, in football, you can lose in two or three balls.
"They started the way we needed to start and, when you have such high pace with the quality of the players... We didn't have the same level."
Wimbledon defender Toby Sibbick, who was born 11 years after the club won the 1988 FA Cup, their only major silverware - told BT Sport scoring the fourth goal had been "one of the highlights for me".
He added: "I thought the boys were excellent. It's a great win, look at the fans, this is what it's about."
Everton were also stunned by Championship strugglers Millwall 3-2 but, unlike Pellegrini, Marco Silva sought to deflect blame by pinning the defeat on the lack of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The Toffees felt aggrieved as their opponents' second goal appeared to go in off the arm of Jake Cooper.
To make matters worse, the strike was shown on a big screen in the stadium immediately afterwards, with the handball obvious to everyone watching at The Den.
Premier League grounds hosting FA Cup ties are using VAR this season but the technology was not installed at Millwall - a situation the Everton manager said was unfair.
Claiming "it does not make sense", the Portuguese bemoaned: "If we are to be fair with all the clubs, you have to be fair with the competition and you also have to do it for all the games.
"Now we go home with big frustration. I am not here just to be angry with the referee but it is true.
"It was a clear handball in the moment. The players, they saw and went to speak with the assistant and thousands of people saw (it) on the big screen."
Shrewsbury Town nearly made it a trio of upsets on a day of surprises and it took an added-time equaliser from Wolves' Matt Doherty to deny them a place in the fifth round.
The League One outfit were leading 2-0 after 70 minutes at New Meadow and Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts admitted to "real mixed emotions" after Nuno Espirito Santo's men forced a replay.
He told the BBC: "I base myself on performances and that was very, very good, but I am disappointed not to win the game."

Football: Manchester United sack Jose Mourinho, caretaker manager to be appointed till end of season

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN, REUTERS) - Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho following Sunday's (Dec 16) defeat at Liverpool, ending a tenure that began in May 2016.
A poor start to the Premier League season has seen United slip 19 points behind the leaders, Liverpool, and fall off the pace in the hunt for a top-four place. They have won only once in six league matches, drawing during that sequence with struggling Southampton and Crystal Palace.
"Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect," United said in a statement.
"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future. A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."
Relations between the manager and the executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, also seemed strained after the club did not sign a central defender this summer. The club concluded that of the players in that position targeted by Mourinho whom they could potentially land, none was an upgrade on the existing squad.
A sense of disunity at United was encapsulated when Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice-captaincy before a League Cup defeat by Derby County and confronted him at training the following morning. The manager has criticised his players' "mental approach", attitude and quality.
Mourinho has seemed less than happy since the build-up to the season, when he described preparations as "very bad" because many of his senior players were resting after the World Cup.

The manager demanded "respect, respect, respect" for his three Premier League titles following United's 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham in late August but will not get a chance to add a fourth at Old Trafford.
In two full seasons at Old Trafford, Mourinho won the Europa League and League Cup (2016-17) before finishing second in the Premier League last season and reaching the FA Cup final. In that period since replacing Louis van Gaal, United's spending stands at £364.3 million (S$632.1 million) on eight buys.
Zinedine Zidane, available following his surprise decision to resign his position at Real Madrid following their Champions League success over Liverpool in May, has been linked with the United job.

Villans ascend into EPL heaven

Villans ascend into EPL heaven

LONDON • Aston Villa are back in the big time, £170 million (S$296.8 million) richer and free from the demons that have tormented them since they lost in the play-off final 12 months ago.
After three roller-coaster years in the Championship, the Villans returned to the Premier League after beating Derby 2-1 yesterday and how fitting that Dean Smith, a lifelong supporter, was there at the helm to complete that journey.
There were wild scenes at the end, in the stands and on the Wembley pitch, as Prince William and former club striker John Carew jumped all over one another, while captain Jack Grealish and his teammates celebrated in front of the Villa supporters.
Villa, in truth, handled the occasion far better than Derby and put themselves in a commanding position when John McGinn, capitalising on an error from Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos, doubled their lead after Anwar El Ghazi had scored just before half-time.
The Rams played within themselves for too long and it was not until the final 20 minutes that Frank Lampard's team started to attack with any real conviction.
Martyn Waghorn's goal, nine minutes from time, gave Derby some late hope, but it was no more than that and Villa showed plenty of grit and resilience to hold on.
Villa captain Grealish told Sky Sports: "I'm speechless. It was such a hard game going up against a great team. We knew it was hard and it would go down to the wire.
"Like I said in my last 10 interviews, when I look around and I've McGinn, Tammy (Abraham) and Anwar, I feel like we can beat anyone. I can't describe how happy I am. We all know where this club belongs. I've stayed here, we've worked hard and we're finally here now."
With so much at stake, it was perhaps not surprising that the game took a while to come alive.
With tension filling the air, it was scrappy at times and hard to see where a goal was coming from until El Ghazi's breakthrough.
If there was an element of good fortune about the way the ball ended up in the back of the net, the passage of play leading up to the goal was by far the best move of the first half.
Albert Adomah cut the ball back to Ahmed Elmohamady, who curled a cross into the box, over the head of Richard Keogh, and El Ghazi threw himself at a ball that went in off his shoulder.
His goal seemed to liberate Villa, whose positive start to the second half was rewarded with another goal just before the hour mark.
From Derby's point of view, it was a dreadful goal to concede and questions will be asked as to how Roos allowed McGinn to get to a high ball ahead of him.
Frank Lampard's men were roused after Jack Marriott drilled a low shot that flicked off Waghorn, another substitute, past Jed Steer in goal. Villa, though, were not going to relinquish their grip on a game that had slipped through their hands a year ago.

Football: 'I think it's a goodbye', says Chelsea's Hazard

BAKU (AFP) - Chelsea forward Eden Hazard said he expects Wednesday's (May 29) 4-1 victory over Arsenal in the Europa League final to be his last game for the club.
"I think it's a goodbye, but in football you never know. My dream was to play in the Premier League and I did this for seven years for one of the biggest clubs in the world. So now maybe it's time for a new challenge," Hazard told BT Sport after the game.
Hazard, who scored twice in the final in Baku, has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and said he had already made up his mind about his future.
"I've taken my decision already. Now it depends on the club. I'm just waiting like the fans wait, so you will know in a couple of days," he added.
"My target today was to win the trophy that's it, that's the only thing that was on my mind."
