Football: Iran coach Carlos Queiroz set for Colombia switch after Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said on Friday (Jan 18) that he was "honoured" to be courted by Colombia, who want the former Real Madrid boss to join them after the Asian Cup.
But the Portuguese, who has been Iran coach for eight rollercoaster years, insisted that he remains committed to bringing Asian football's biggest prize back to the country for the first time in more than 40 years.
"There's no doubt that Colombia expressed its interest and confidence in me," Queiroz told AFP in an interview before Iran face Oman in the last 16 at the weekend.
"It is an unbelievable national team with fantastic players and a very high Fifa ranking (12) - it's prestigious, an honour and something that makes me very proud.
"But at the moment my responsibility is with Iran," added the 65-year-old, who almost steered Iran to the knockout stages of last year's World Cup in Russia.
"After the Asian Cup I will take into consideration for sure Colombia's invitation."
Despite Team Melli's strong World Cup showing, Iranian football authorities opted not to offer him a new four-year contract - a decision that stung the former Portugal coach.
"I was a little bit surprised to be honest," he admitted. "These circumstances weren't created by me - it was the decision of the federation.
"Coaches have their futures in the hands of presidents," shrugged Queiroz.
"They want to move in another direction and for sure I will find another solution too."
Iran are joint Asian Cup favourites with South Korea and Queiroz praised the desire and determination shown by his players despite the turmoil caused by sanctions imposed on the country.
"I try to select players who put the shirt above everything," he said.
"You can never compromise with attitude and character. Either you have loyalty, courage, attitude - or you don't. You can't buy it," added Queiroz, whose team are expected to prove too strong for Oman in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
"People are suffering with these emotional sanctions that are affecting the country and society. But when you live together with these fantastic people and the spirit they have, you fall in love."
While breaking up is never easy, Queiroz feels a special bond with the Iran players.
"I never saw players delivering so much and receiving so little," he said in a thinly veiled dig at Iranian officials.
"I love the players - they never quit, they are strong characters, they always want to improve, they fight. They are so dedicated to the country and the shirt. This is probably one of the strongest football families I ever met in my life."
Iran's failure to lift the Asian Cup since completing a hat-trick of victories in 1976 is something of a mystery.
But Queiroz's players look capable of ending that title drought after topping Group D, where victories over Yemen and Vietnam were followed by a goalless draw with bitter rivals Iraq.
"Nobody puts more pressure on us than me and our players," insisted Queiroz.
"But we won't fall into the trap of becoming tense, or lose control, because of the dreams that we have in front of us."

ROME â€¢ Roma teenager Nicolo Zaniolo has been told not to get ahead of himself after he became the youngest Italian to score twice in a Champions League match as they beat visiting Porto 2-1 in their last-16, first-leg clash on Tuesday.
Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco sent out the warning after the 19-year-old scored his brace for the Italian Serie A side in six second-half minutes at the Stadio Olimpico.
The midfielder gave Roma a comfortable advantage before Porto substitute Adrian Lopez responded with an away goal.
"It's right for him to be lauded, he has done well," di Francesco said in a post-match news conference.
"The praises are right, but without excess and with caution. I told him to remain focused and to always play with his head.
"He is on a path of development that is beyond expectations; the matches he doesn't play well in are also a motive for growth."
Di Francesco was pleased with his side's performance, particularly in the second half, despite them conceding what could be a crucial goal for Porto with 10 minutes left.
"We grew into the game and used the ball better, the central midfielders were better with the quality of their play," he added after Edin Dzeko struck the post in an uneventful first period.

Before Nicolo Zaniolo's brace, the youngest to score two or more in the Champions League was Raul who, at 18, hit a hat-trick for Real Madrid against Ferencvarosi in 1995.

"The two teams were looking at and studying each other. We hit the post in the first half too, it was good. In the second half, we had more determination in the final third.
"It was one of our best performances from the perspective of feeling like a team."
Zaniolo, who has become a fan favourite since arriving from Inter Milan in exchange for Radja Nainggolan last summer, could not hide his delight after the match.
The youngster, who has five goals and two assists in 22 appearances in all competitions this season, was also given an ovation by an ecstatic home crowd who see him as the heir to club legend Francesco Totti.
"It's an incredible night, I'm speechless and never would have expected such a thing," Zaniolo told Sky Sport Italia.
"But we've got the second leg coming up, we shouldn't have conceded the goal."
Porto coach Sergio Conceicao believes the tie remains finely poised ahead of the return leg in Portugal on March 6.
"At the start, it was balanced, then when we tried to be more incisive, we conceded," he said.
"But we still have a 50-50 chance, just like before the game."

Both English sides had trailed their respective ties 3-0, but overturned the deficit to book their spot in the June 1 final at the Wanda Metropolitano Arena in Madrid.
Elliott Danker, senior presenter on Money FM 89.3, said: "Even as a Manchester United fan, I have to give it to Liverpool.
"When you consider they're also fighting for the Premier League and that race has gone down to the wire, and with the thought they might end the season empty-handed playing at the back of their minds... To overcome that is so impressive.
"The moment I went into office the next day and saw a few of my colleagues who are Liverpool fans, I had to tell them: Respect."
Arsenal fan and Singapore Management University undergraduate Victoria Lim, 23, added: "We got to see the power of Liverpool playing at Anfield. They played with so much passion, grit and belief. It was a great match and comeback, regardless of which club you support.
"When they sang (club anthem You'll Never Walk Alone) after the match, I got goosebumps."
A Twitter poll conducted by the @STsportsdesk account saw almost three quarters of the over 600 respondents pick Liverpool's result as the more impressive.
United fan Vighnesh Vasanthanathan, 25, said the quality of opponent was what made the Reds' triumph more remarkable.
"At the end of the day, Ajax are a team still growing in maturity," said the Republic Polytechnic student. "They had youth everywhere on the pitch, and when it mattered most, Spurs had the experienced players to give them the edge and win the game."
The final in Madrid will be the first between two English teams since 2008, when United beat Chelsea on penalties, and Newcastle United fan 'Irfan Rahman, 32, believes it reflects the current strength of the Premier League.
"To me, it shows the Premier League is the best league in the world," said the assistant executive. "When you consider Liverpool and Spurs have both not won the Premier League title but are now in the Champions League final, it shows just how competitive the league is."
Whether the EPL is the best in the world is debatable, said Danker, 37, but it is "the most entertaining and most talked-about."
He added: "An all-English Champions League final, and Liverpool making their second in a row, will make (that reputation) better.
"Plus, last year England reached their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.
"Maybe fans can now expect Ballon d'Or winners and other world-class players moving to the Premier League soon."

LONDON â€¢ Football can be a cruel game at times. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Cardiff were leading 1-0 and the mood in the away end was mutinous.
"We want (Maurizio) Sarri out" reverberated loud and clear, so much so that it was tempting to wonder whether Chelsea's manager was fighting to hold on to his job.
How quickly things can change. By the time the final whistle was blown yesterday, the Chelsea fans were celebrating a 2-1 victory that kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish, leaving the Welsh side crestfallen.
The killer goal was Cesar Azpilicueta's equaliser in the 84th minute. It should never have been allowed to stand as the Chelsea captain was clearly offside as he nodded home Marcos Alonso's flick-on.
Neil Warnock was furious, which is often the case although on this occasion, it was impossible not to feel sympathy for the Cardiff manager.
A goal like Azpilicueta's will not be allowed to stand next season when the Video Assistant Referee technology is introduced in the Premier League.
That, however, is no help to Cardiff, who remain five points adrift of safety after Ruben Loftus-Cheek headed in Willian's cross to complete their misery.

The linesman must be looking at that and thinking 'he's offside', but he doesn't. What an earth can he be looking at? No one is obstructing his view. He's clearly offside.

Chelsea could not have been more fortunate - this victory and performance were about as unconvincing as it gets.
For all the Blues' possession in the first half, it had been hard to see where a goal would come from.

The team sheet had not helped the Italian's cause. His surprise decision to "rest" Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante, both of whom started on the bench, raised eyebrows before a ball was kicked.
There was also no league start for Callum Hudson-Odoi. In truth, the three of them could have been forgiven for feeling relieved to have played no part in a soporific opening 45 minutes.
The breakthrough arrived within less than a minute after the break and, in keeping with Chelsea's performance, it was Cardiff who took the lead.
Harry Arter whipped a low cross into the area and Victor Camarasa, who stood about 16 yards out, connected with a first-time volley that flew past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Cue more anger among the Chelsea fans, who started to call for Sarri to be dismissed.
Hazard was then brought on for Pedro, followed by Loftus-Cheek for Jorginho, whose only notable contribution was a yellow card in the first half for a cynical foul.
The former's introduction at least injected a little life into Chelsea, yet they still struggled to carve out chances until the equaliser six minutes from time.
Alonso glanced the ball on and an offside Azpilicueta headed in from inside the box before Loftus-Cheek broke Cardiff hearts with the added-time winner.

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes critics have been too quick to write off his side's chances of defending the Premier League crown, and he expects more twists and turns in the title race.
Back-to-back draws for Liverpool have handed City an opportunity to move to the top of the league table for the first time since December with a win over Everton on Wednesday.
Guardiola stressed the need for calm during the title run-in, saying the quality of their Premier League opponents means there will be plenty of surprise results between now and the end of the campaign.
"Three or four days ago we were already done, the champions were Liverpool," Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday (Feb 5).
"Now we can be leading.
"We try to be calm. There will be surprises and it will be tough for teams to win every game. Non-contenders have ability to create problems.
"What I'm more concerned about is never to forget who we are as a team, doing what we have to do. That's what I want to watch, and after we see about the results, the table."
City rebounded from a midweek league defeat by Newcastle United to beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday.
When asked if the result had lifted the mood in the dressing room, Guardiola said: "I like to see my teams in the past and in the future being not happy when they don't win a game.
"I don't like to see them laugh when they lose. My job is nice when you laugh and have won."
He also said the team have hardly had any time to savour their wins due to the packed match schedule.
"It's been every three days for three months. It's like a machine - go, go, go."

Football: Sala's missing plane found, say investigators

LONDON (AFP) - The missing plane carrying Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala and his pilot has been found, investigators told AFP on Sunday (Feb 3).
"I can confirm it has been found," a spokeswoman for Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.
She said the AAIB would issue a statement on Monday.
Sala was travelling from France to join up with his new club, Premier League side Cardiff City, in a light aircraft on Jan 21 when it went missing close to the Channel Islands.
Suspected debris from the plane washed up on the Normandy coastline in France last Wednesday.
Sala was flying in the Piper PA-46 Malibu plane after transferring from French team Nantes in a â‚¬17 million (S$30 million) move.
It vanished from radar around 20km north of Guernsey, with pilot Dave Ibbotson the only other person aboard.

David Mearns, whose private company, Blue Water Recoveries, was hired by Sala's family to search for the plane, said on Twitter that the wreck was spotted early on Sunday.

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Some football teams gripe about playing against 12 men when a referee's decisions go against them but few have more cause for complaint thanÂ Dutch side Harkemase Boys, who were left fuming when a whistler scored against them on Saturday (May 26).
Footage of Maurice Paarhuis accidentally scoring for Hoek against Harkemase Boys has attracted almost five million views on Twitter (@HarkemaseBoys).
The referee told Dutch newspapers on Monday he had no option but to award the goal in the lower-league game.
"The ball hit my foot. I tried to get my leg out of the way but I couldn't do it on time," said Paarhuis, who had a tough time explaining why the goal should stand to the home side.
"The players of Harkemase Boys were asking: 'What's happening here?' But in these cases, the referee is a so-called 'dead element' and that means I had no option but to award a goal."
In the end, the goal mattered little as Harkemase Boys ran out 4-2 winners, and while the game's laws dictated that the goal had to stand a change is being brought in next season.
The ball will be deemed out of play "when it touches a match official, remains on the field of play and a team starts a promising attack, or the ball goes directly into the goal or the team in possession of the ball changes".
Play is to be restarted with a dropped ball.

Paarhuis says he sees the funny side of the incident and has been inundated with messages.
"My mobile is full of quips from people across the football world. You can believe some of them have approached me to become a striker for their team."
Paarhuis has been a referee since the age of 16 but also played at amateur level.
"It's not my first goal, I got a couple as a player," he added. "But I hope that it is both my first and last as a referee."

MONACO â€¢ Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze is confident that his German side can go far in the Champions League after they qualified for the last 16 as Group A winners with a 2-0 win over Thierry Henry's Monaco on Tuesday.
Portugal midfielder Raphael Guerreiro scored twice to claim all three points for the visitors as they snatched top spot from Atletico Madrid - who could only draw 0-0 at Club Brugge - with a superior head-to-head record.
"With all the possession we had, you'd have to say we deserved the win in the end," Gotze said on the club's official website.
"Winning the group makes it that bit sweeter. We were saying before the match that we felt Atletico might draw 0-0. Fortunately, this turned out to be the case.
"The situation is really positive. As long as we work hard as a team, both in defence and in attack, we're going to have a lot of success."
Meanwhile, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo stole the limelight before their match when he appeared to let slip a sexist remark, telling a female reporter he did not wish to discuss money with a woman.
Cristina Garcia Tirado of Spanish television station Cuatro had asked if the club had enough money to offer a new contract to veteran defender Diego Godin.
"To be sincere, I don't like to speak about money because it is uncouth, and even less so with a woman," Cerezo said in response to her question.
Garcia herself played down the comment, saying Cerezo was "a great person and a gentleman" and had always been respectful to her and other women.
"It was an unfortunate moment from the president but, normally, he is very respectful towards me. I think it was a lapse and he didn't think about his answer. He has always treated me kindly," she said.
"It's true that sometimes he says things and makes jokes without thinking about the consequences, but he does not want to cause any harm."

ABU DHABI â€¢ Qatar, 2022 World Cup hosts, cruised into Friday's Asian Cup final against Japan in style, still yet to concede in six matches after a 4-0 rout of hosts United Arab Emirates yesterday.
The opener came on 22 minutes when goalkeeper Khalid Eisa let a seemingly harmless Boualem Khoukhi shot from the edge of the box sneak under his hands.
Almoez Ali doubled the lead on 37 minutes with his eighth goal of the tournament, a curler into the bottom corner that equalled the record by Iranian legend Ali Daei in 1996.
In the 81st minute, Hassan Al-Haydos broke away and dinked the ball over the goalkeeper.
Then UAE's Ismail Ahmed was sent off for an off-the-ball elbow after Mexican referee Cesar Ramos reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor.
Hamid Ismail completed the rout three minutes into stoppage time in a two-on-three counter.
The clash at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium was played under a cloud of political dispute in the Gulf. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt have imposed a diplomatic, trade and transport boycott of Qatar since June 2017 over allegations Doha supports terrorism, a charge Qatar denies.
Qatar faced a hostile crowd at the sold-out 43,000-seat stadium in Abu Dhabi, where the emirate's sport authority offered free tickets to UAE fans.
Qatari nationals, who previously travelled freely in the Gulf, cannot enter the UAE unless they receive a special permit. But the team have had support from some Omanis, whose country has taken a neutral stand in the row.
