Football: Spurs stunned by Palace as FA Cup holders Chelsea ease past Wednesday

LONDON (AFP) – Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second defeat in English knockout football in a matter of days as they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (Jan 27).
Connor Wickham gave the unfancied Eagles, 29 points adrift of Spurs in the Premier League, a ninth-minute lead before a penalty by former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend made it 2-0.
Spurs’ Kieran Trippier missed with a penalty before half-time as Tottenham suffered more spot-kick woe following Thursday’s shoot-out defeat by Chelsea, another of their London rivals, in a League Cup semi-final.
FA Cup-holders Chelsea had no such problems later on Sunday as they marked Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain’s club debut with a 3-0 win at home to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.  Willian scored twice either side of a goal from highly-rated English teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi, linked with a transfer window move to German giants Bayern Munich.
There was no goal for Higuain, signed on loan until the end of the season from Juventus on Wednesday.  But Gianfranco Zola, Chelsea’s assistant manager and himself a former Blues striker, told the BBC: “We are pleased with Gonzalo Higuain’s performance, he was trying to find the space and get on the ball.
“It wasn’t easy as they had a lot of players round him.”
Earlier, Tottenham’s reverse left Mauricio Pochettino still searching for his first trophy as their manager since the Argentinian joined from Southampton in 2014, with Spurs’ last piece of silverware the 2008 League Cup.
Spurs were without injured England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, while the in-form Son Heung-Min had still to return from international duty with South Korea at the Asia Cup.
Pochettino, however, decided to omit Christian Eriksen, with the influential playmaker not even among Spurs’ substitutes at Selhurst Park.  For all they are third in the Premier League, Spurs are nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

‘So painful’

The Champions League is now Tottenham’s only realistic hope of a trophy this season, with Pochettino’s men playing Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.  “It was so painful to lose the game like this,” Pochettino told BT Sport.
“We have to look forward to the Premier League and Champions League. We cannot complain and just try in the two competitions to give our best.”
It took Palace a mere nine minutes to open the scoring, Wickham following up after a Jeff Schlupp shot was blocked by Spurs goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.  Palace doubled their lead when Townsend slammed a home a penalty after Spurs’ Kyle Walker-Peters handled a cross into the box.
But at the other end, after Patrick van Aanholt brought down Juan Foyth, Trippier blasted a penalty well wide of the post.
Chelsea did not have things all their own way against second-tier Wednesday, who thought they had been awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute.  Joey Pelupessy tried to meet Steven Fletcher’s pass, with Ethan Ampadu sliding in to win the ball before being kicked by the Wednesday midfielder.
Referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty but this was overturned by VAR, being trialled in some English cup fixtures this season.
“It’s crazy,” said Owls’ caretaker boss Steve Agnew, holding the fort ahead of Steve Bruce’s imminent arrival.  “Obviously the VAR decisions are correct but what baffled me was surely it’s a corner if it came off their player. The referee gave a drop ball. And a minute later they have a penalty.”
Wednesday’s woe was compounded soon afterwards when Willian scored from the spot after Sam Hutchinson trod on Cesar Azpilicueta inside the box.  VAR was called into action again but this time Marriner’s decision was upheld and Willian, after appearing to offer the spot-kick to Higuain, made no mistake.
Chelsea had to wait until midway through the second half for Hudson-Odoi to make it 2-0 before Willian, playing a neat one-two with Olivier Giroud, completed the scoring seven minutes from time.

Football: Furious Sarri slams Chelsea players as 'difficult to motivate'

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri shamed his Chelsea players by making a remarkable - and perhaps risky - attack on their character on Saturday, suggesting that they may not have the "motivation" and "mentality" of top professionals.
He was so furious about the lackadaisical elements of his team's performance in the 2-0 Premier League loss at Arsenal that, for the first time since joining Chelsea in the summer, the Italian reverted to his native language in his post-game press conference.
The Blues manager did so "because I want to send a message to my players, and I want my message to be very clear".
That message was withering.
Sarri said through an interpreter: "I have to say I'm extremely angry, very angry indeed. This defeat was due to our mentality.
"We played against a team that mentally was far more determined than we were and this is something I can't accept.
"We had the same issue at Tottenham and we spoke frankly about that particular loss (a 3-1 defeat in November). I thought we had managed to overcome this issue.
"But it seems we have an issue with having the right amount of determination and being mentally strong. The fact of the matter is I'm finding that this group of players is extremely difficult to motivate."
Despite having the majority of the ball - 64 per cent possession - at the Emirates, the away side were blunt in attack and casual in defence, and could have conceded more in a first half dominated by the home team, who scored through Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny.
Even though Arsenal lost Hector Bellerin after the break to a serious-looking knee injury, Chelsea had just one shot on target which again questioned Sarri's decision to start without a recognised striker.
Olivier Giroud was named on the bench while Alvaro Morata was omitted ahead of his imminent move to Atletico Madrid.
However, he insisted it was his players' attitude and not his system that was the problem despite Eden Hazard again having a limited impact while playing as a "false nine".
Sarri added: "When you see this kind of game, when one team is more determined than the other, you can't really talk about tactics."
While Chelsea remain in fourth place, they are now only three points above Arsenal and Manchester United, and Sarri appeared to question whether his side had the stomach for the top-four dogfight.
With a 1-0 deficit to overturn against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday, Sarri hinted at a "new player coming in" - widely reported to be Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain - that could give his team a lift but still wants them to "face up to their own responsibilities".

Football: Solskjaer insists Man United can beat Chelsea on Sunday and go on to qualify for Champions League

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United can still qualify for the Champions League despite a collapse in form extended by their derby defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday (April 24).
United have now lost seven of their past nine games in all competitions, leaving them three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League with three matches to go.
But they have been helped by the stumbles of others, with Arsenal's 3-1 defeat by Wolves on Wednesday keeping the door open.
Chelsea visit Old Trafford on Sunday and Solskjaer has urged his side to keep fighting for Champions League football despite the chastening 2-0 defeat at the hands of City.
"We need more quality on Sunday and, if we win that game, we have two games to go," Solskjaer told manutd.com.
"Of course, we want to get into the top four. I haven't been planning on playing on Thursday nights (in the Europa League) yet. We just have to make sure we give ourselves a chance on Sunday.
"We're three games away from the end of the season, we're three points behind the top four and no one would have given us a chance a few months ago.
"It's maybe taken its toll on the players. It's my job now to see who wants to sacrifice enough to be here."
Like Arsenal and United, Chelsea have also endured some disappointing recent results, missing their own chance to pull clear when they drew at home with Burnley on Monday.
United's poor recent form has been a particular disappointment given the impressive sequence of results when Solskjaer first arrived as caretaker boss following Jose Mourinho's exit in December.

They began brightly against City at Old Trafford on Wednesday, but could not maintain the intensity required, although they avoided a repeat of the insipid display duing the weekend's 4-0 loss at Everton.
Striker Marcus Rashford urged fans to keep the faith.
"Tough period for us at the moment and as a United fan myself I understand how you're feeling," he wrote on Twitter.
"We've shown how we can play, we need to get back to doing what we know we can do!"

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino remained defiant despite his side preparing for their Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax Amsterdam in disjointed fashion as they had two men sent off in a 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth.

Football: Dutch reach Nations League final with extra-time win over England

GUIMARAES, Portugal (REUTERS) - The Netherlands capitalised on two England defensive mix-ups in extra time as they came from behind to win their Nations League semi-final 3-1 on Thursday (June 6) and set up a showpiece final against Portugal.
The Dutch went 2-1 ahead when defender Kyle Walker turned the ball into his own net after a mistake by team mate John Stones in the 97th minute and Quincy Promes completed the scoring in the 114th after Ross Barkley gave the ball away.
England thought they had scored in the 83rd minute when Jesse Lingard ran on to Barkley’s pass to find the net but he was ruled a fraction offside after a two-minute VAR review.
The Dutch will face hosts Portugal in Sunday’s final in Porto, while England were left to contemplate a fourth successive competitive semi-final defeat following their losses at the 1990 and 2018 World Cups and Euro 96.
“It was a war of attrition,” said Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman. “We have beaten Germany, France and now the number four team in the world – this reflects our development. We haven’t played semi-finals and finals so this is new to us but we’re taking it in our stride.”
It was the Dutch defence that initially went to pieces when the highly-rated Matthijs De Ligt failed to control a pass and tripped Marcus Rashford when the England forward slipped past him, giving away a penalty.
Rashford calmly sent Jasper Cillessen the wrong way from the spot in the 32nd minute.
England nearly returned the gift early in the second half when Walker was dispossessed by Memphis Depay but his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
By now, though, the Dutch were in control and, while much of their possession was unproductive, they deservedly levelled with a powerful De Ligt header in the 73rd minute as the 19-year-old atoned for his earlier mistake.
England produced what they thought might be the winner with a flowing move which started on their own goal line. The ball found Raheem Sterling, who flicked it to Barkley and he slipped it through for Lingard to score.
But, with the celebrations complete, the referee chalked it off after Lingard was shown by VAR to be centimetres ahead of the last man.
After that, it all went downhill for England.
Seven minutes into extra time, Stones dwelled on the ball on the edge of his area and was dispossessed by Depay, whose shot was brilliantly parried by Pickford.
However, the ball broke loose, Promes got there first and, although he failed to make proper contact, it hit Walker and trickled into the net.
Another England fiasco followed when Barkley’s heavy touch from a pass allowed Depay to nip in and he laid the ball off for Promes to seal the deserved Dutch win.
“We made too many mistakes in our third of the pitch, partly because of that pressure and partly because of errors by us,” England manager Gareth Southgate said.
“It’s very painful for everybody, it’s a night where we have learned so much. It was tough to take in the end because you get to another semi-final, it should be a positive but everybody leaves even more deflated.”

Football: Valencia late show snatches Copa draw at Betis

MADRID (AFP) - Valencia staged another late Cup comeback as Kevin Gameiro's injury-time strike snatched a 2-2 draw with Real Betis in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at the Benito Villamarin on Thursday (Feb 7).
Betis, playing in the last four for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2005, grabbed the lead in the semi-final, first leg when Loren nodded home after a short corner routine on the stroke of half-time.
The Seville outfit looked to be closing in on a home final against either Barcelona or Real Madrid when 37-year-old former Spain winger Joaquin scored directly from a corner, but Denis Cheryshev pulled one back for Valencia with 20 minutes to play.
Visitors Valencia, having scored twice in injury time to edge out Getafe in the quarters, levelled in the 92nd minute as substitute Gameiro diverted in Rodrigo's low cross.
The two teams will meet again at the Mestalla on Feb 28.
