Solskjaer aims for 3rd

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged his Manchester United players to get 15 points from the final six games to secure a top-three finish that will guarantee Champions League football.
By his calculation, that would mean beating either or both Manchester City, who are battling Liverpool to retain their Premier League title, and Chelsea in consecutive home games this month.
Urging his men to collect "as many points as possible" and reap the rewards, he said ahead of today's league game against West Ham: "We want top three. Top four is also an aim... but we should aim for 15 points.
"But now it's about West Ham and focusing on (that).
"If we get 15, we'll be (in the) top three because in those games, hopefully, we'll beat Chelsea."
It may seem a tough ask given that the Red Devils have lost four of their last five games in all competitions, the latest being the 1-0 home loss to Barcelona in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday.
A meeting with mid-table Hammers at Old Trafford represents the perfect opportunity to arrest an alarming slide in form.
Solskjaer pinned the reason for the slump on his team not being "ruthless or clinical enough" in front of goal and revealed it was something they were trying to rectify in training.
He added: "You're never happy when you don't win games, but it's been a period where we've played some good teams. We've been practising. As a striker, I know how important that little belief is so we've been putting balls in the goal.
"Sometimes, you just don't have that little feel, that confidence, so you have to do it in training and hope it comes out again."
But there is little he can do to freshen up his starting XI owing to a rash of injuries and suspensions.
Defenders Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are both banned and Solskjaer revealed that Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian could be in line to fill their full-back spots.
There are big doubts over midfielder Nemanja Matic and forward Alexis Sanchez.
The manager also spoke about the future of Ander Herrera, whose contract expires in the summer. He has been the subject of heavy speculation, with sources saying he has agreed a pre-contract agreement with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spain midfielder, who will not play today after suffering a muscle injury in training, has managed just 134 minutes since picking up a hamstring problem on Feb 24.
Solskjaer hinted that the "future might have been worrying him", thus contributing to his injury woes, adding: "That comes at a time as you say there are contract talks.
"But that's ongoing, I can't really comment too much on how far they are down the line. You have to ask him. I don't know how they've been, the last few talks.
"He's always giving his all, doesn't matter if it's five weeks or five years on his contract."

Defending Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions Albirex Niigata will play last season's runners-up Home United as they kick off the upcoming local football season with the Community Shield showdown on Feb 23 at Jalan Besar.
From 2014 to 2018, the Community Shield also doubled up as a league match. But no league points will be up for grabs in this fixture this year.
Albirex are defending champions from 2016 to 2018, while Home United have never won the competition, losing in 2008, 2012 and 2014.
The SPL will start on March 2 with Geylang International hosting Albirex at Our Tampines Hub and Young Lions taking on Balestier Khalsa at Jalan Besar.
The season's full schedule can be accessed at http://fas.org.sg/competitions/fixtures
With the shared stadiums initiative to kick off this year, the eight local-based SPL clubs will be sharing four regional stadiums - Bishan (Balestier and Home United), Jalan Besar (Hougang United and Young Lions), Jurong (Albirex and Warriors FC), and Our Tampines Hub (Geylang and Tampines Rovers).

Football: Atletico the greatest threat to Barca's La Liga hopes, says Valverde

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has admitted he views Atletico Madrid as a greater threat to his side winning La Liga this season than Real Madrid.
Atletico, who play Getafe on Saturday (Jan 26), sit five points behind Barca in the table while Real's stuttering campaign means they are already 10 adrift of the league leaders.
Real have shown signs of a return to form in recent weeks, having won four out of their last five matches, including an impressive victory over Sevilla.
Sevilla sit third, ahead of Real on goal difference, but after playing a game more.
"We look more at who is immediately behind us," Valverde said at a press conference on Saturday.
"I value both Atletico and Real Madrid very highly because one is a great team and the other never gives up. But you have to look more at the one that is five points behind."
Barcelona have made four signings in the January transfer window, their latest move a €75 million (S$115 million) deal for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who will arrive in July.
De Jong has said he spoke to both Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola and Paris Saint-Germain's Thomas Tuchel before making his decision, but not Valverde.
"You cannot talk to a player who has a contract elsewhere and it's not my way of doing things," Valverde said. "I have nothing more to say about it."
Kevin Prince-Boateng has also arrived from Sassuolo and Jeison Murillo from Valencia, each on loan, while Jean-Clair Todibo has agreed to join from Toulouse next summer.
Asked if he has the final say on signings, Valverde said: "I talk to the technical committee and we have normal conversations. I never speak in absolute terms, that someone has to come, no ifs or buts. We speak generally and talk about options."

DENIS SUAREZ, MALCOM COULD LEAVE

Valverde has admitted the club could allow fringe players to leave this month, with Denis Suarez and Malcom both linked with moves away.
Suarez was dropped from the squad to face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday to make way for Boateng, while Malcom started, but struggled, and came off after 63 minutes. Both are in the squad to face Girona.

"He has many qualities," said Valverde, speaking about Malcom.
"He is direct and can make something happen.
"He has to be more aggressive and have more consistency in his game. Nothing is missing but there are others who play and you have to choose between them all."
Barcelona's game against Girona at Montilivi on Sunday had been the fixture identified by La Liga to be played in the United States.
The plan, however, fell through due to a lack of support from governing bodies like Fifa and the Spanish FA (RFEF), although both Barca and Girona had supported the idea.
"I saw it as a distant option," Valverde said.
"They had to fulfil conditions for it to be played in Miami that in the end were not fulfilled.
"We were willing to play where they said, it was not important to us and I didn't lose sleep about it. We will see in the future."
Ousmane Dembele will miss the game this weekend with an ankle injury while Samuel Umtiti is still recovering from a knee problem. Rafinha is also out with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Stronger action to fight racism

Stronger action to fight racism

PODGORICA • European football's governing body Uefa yesterday charged Montenegro over racist behaviour by their fans towards England players during their Euro 2020 qualifier.
Gareth Southgate's men were irrepressible as they ran out 5-1 winners. However, the rout was soured by the prolonged racist abuse, leading to calls for stadium bans.
Defender Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants while forward Raheem Sterling, who called for Montenegro supporters to be banned from matches, was also targeted on Monday night.
Calling the abuse as "not acceptable", England manager Southgate told TV channel ITV Sport: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened."
And Uefa has taken action by starting disciplinary proceedings, with the case set to be heard on May 16. Montenegro could face a partial or full stadium closure for their next qualifying match.
But Southgate, whose side ran riot on the night through Michael Keane, Ross Barkley's brace and a penalty from Harry Kane before Sterling added gloss to the scoreline, felt "sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people".
The 48-year-old added: "There's an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. We have to make sure the education is right for everybody, in our country, the same."
He also said he had yet to talk to Sterling, who responded to the taunts by cupping his hands to his ears towards a section of Montenegro fans when he scored late on.
The Manchester City player told Sky Sports after the Group A game: "I didn't hear (the chants) personally, but Danny made it clear and (made me) aware that's what they were doing, so I just wanted to show them they were going to need more than that to upset and stop us.
"It's a shame to see this keep going on. It's now time for the people in charge to put a stamp on it. You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to punish the fans who can't come to the games.

A SERIOUS PROBLEM
You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to make it a bit harder. You've got to punish the whole fans who can't come to the games... because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them.
RAHEEM STERLING, who was targeted by Montenegro fans, urging stronger measures against racist abuse.

"You've got to do something that will really make them think twice because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them."
He later took to social media to revel in the resounding victory, tweeting: "Best way to silence the haters... (and yeah I mean racists)."
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who became the second-youngest England player to start a competitive game at the Podgorica City Stadium, also felt the provocative goading was "not right".
Admitting it had marred his career milestone, the 18-year-old told beIN Sports: "You are trying to enjoy the moment but, when you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it's unacceptable.
"I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal. Me and Rosey heard it, the 'Oooh, Oooh' monkey stuff.
"Hopefully, Uefa will deal with it."
The unsavoury scenes drew swift condemnation from other parties, with football's anti-discrimination group Kick it Out tweeting: "Disgraceful to hear racist chants directed at black England players this evening.
"As we've argued countless times, it's time for Uefa to take strong, decisive action - fines won't do. Extended stadium bans or tournament expulsion are what's needed."
Pundit Ian Wright agreed, claiming that a slap on the wrist would be little deterrence. The former Arsenal striker told ITV: "They (Montenegro) will be fined a pittance, and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else. It's not going to stop them."

Football: Sister will 'never stop' search for missing Sala as rescuers give up

CARDIFF, United Kingdom (AFP) - The sister of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala, whose plane disappeared near the Channel Islands, vowed on Friday (Jan 25) that she would "never stop" looking for her brother despite rescuers ending their search.
"We miss him and we know he's here," Romina Sala told a press conference in Cardiff, the Welsh city whose Premier League football team had just made Sala their record signing.
"We came looking for him and we're going to take him back with us," she added.
Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi urged investigators Friday to resume the search after police called off rescue operations and admitted the chances of finding him were "extremely remote".
Police from Guernsey abandoned the search on Thursday after the light aircraft taking the player to Wales disappeared from radar near the island on Monday.
The missing player's sister echoed Messi's call, saying it was her "priority" to restart the search.
"Emi and the pilot are here and we can't leave them," she said.

She thanked Messi, Argentinian teammate Sergio Aguero and fans for their support, calling on her brother to show his fighting spirit.
"He is a fighter, Emiliano started when he was very young and has always fought.
"All he wanted was to play football and fulfil his dream."
Her family plans to continue the search "until the very end", she explained, breaking in to tears.
"We are not going to stop looking, we are never going to stop.
"I want to find my brother...and I have faith that we will find him."
Sala's family have asked his former club Nantes not to commemorate their former teammate at this weekend's French Cup clash with third-tier Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien.
"We ask you to respect the family who absolutely refuse to talk about mourning and ask us to keep believing," Nantes captain Valentin Rongier told more than 300 Nantes fans who came to an open training session on Thursday.

Football: Sergio Ramos double puts Real Madrid within sight of the Copa del Rey semi-finals

MADRID (AFP) - Sergio Ramos scored twice to put Real Madrid on the brink of the Copa del Rey semi-finals as they came from behind to beat Girona 4-2 in a thrilling first leg on Thursday (Jan 24).
Ramos' chipped penalty gave Madrid a 2-1 half-time lead at the Santiago Bernabeu after Lucas Vazquez had cancelled out Anthony Lozano's early strike.
Girona, however, came again, Alex Granell scoring from the spot, only for Ramos to head home with 13 minutes left before Benzema added a fourth to extend the advantage ahead of next week's second leg.
Ramos now has nine goals in all competitions this season and these two were key as Madrid maintained what it is beginning to look like a second revival under coach Santiago Solari.
After a blistering start, Solari oversaw a dip at the turn of the year but his team have now won four out of their last five, the only slip coming in a second-leg defeat to Leganes when progress was already all but secured.
It would be a timely run into form, with Atletico Madrid in La Liga and then Ajax in the Champions League both to come at the start of next month.
Ten points adrift in the league, this competition now represents Madrid's best hope of a domestic trophy this season and Solari's selection seemed to suggest as much.
He picked a strong line-up, which included a recall for the struggling Marcelo while Toni Kroos made the bench, after recovering from injury.
Girona were keener to rotate as Cristhian Stuani, La Liga's third top scorer, was left on the bench ahead of Sunday's game at home to Barcelona.
Madrid were the better side for most of the first half but gave Girona a head-start. Raul Garcia tore away down the left and his cross to the back post found the unmarked Lozano, who could not miss. Marcelo was two yards behind him.
Benzema has been the unsung hero of Madrid's stuttering season and it was his pass that led to the equaliser. Odriozola sped away and pulled back for Vazquez to score.
Girona were on the backfoot. Benzema fired over, Alvaro Odriozola overran with only the keeper to beat and Luka Modric wanted a penalty after Douglas Luiz robbed him of the ball from behind.
Moments later, Vinicius was clipped by Lozano and this time there was no doubt. Ramos chipped the ball down the middle.
Benzema grazed the post from distance and Madrid were so dominant it looked like they might take the tie away from Girona in the second half.
Instead, in the 67th minute, Marcos Llorente, on as a substitute, threw his arm towards the ball at a corner and Alex Granell swept the penalty into the top corner to pull Girona level.
Solari turned to Isco, his last attacking option on the bench but Madrid's third came from their central defender, the assist from their left back.
Marcelo swung in the cross and Ramos climbed high above Marc Muniesa to head home.
Girona were on the ropes and Madrid came again. It was almost a mirror image, this time Vinicius curling a sumptuous ball to the back post where Benzema was left with an open net to tap in a fourth.

Eleven Sports hit by poor take-up rate in UK

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of Sports" controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, could be facing closure in the UK & Ireland after failing to attract enough subscribers.
The service, launched less than four months ago, has the UK rights to sports including Italy's Serie A, Spain's LaLiga and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Eleven Sports, which was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders, is aiming to renegotiate rights deals to avoid pulling the plug on its service.
The situation has been created by the UFC triggering an exit clause on its exclusive deal with Eleven Sports, which was due to begin next month, after Eleven Sports was unable to secure promised distribution via pay-TV platforms including Sky, Virgin Media and BT.
Eleven Sports is aiming to renegotiate its sports rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and continue with a much smaller, commercially viable operation in the UK.
"Without carriage agreements with the existing platforms, alongside the challenges posed by rampant piracy, the current market dynamics in the UK & Ireland are very hostile for new entrants," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports.
"We are in discussion with our rights partners, LaLiga and IMG, about how we can restructure our existing agreements in order to continue our current OTT (streaming) service."
UFC, the popular mixed martial arts competition, is understood to be back in talks with the previous rights holder BT about a new broadcast deal.
Eleven Sports is preparing to hand back the TV rights for Serie A to IMG, which acts as agent, which would allow them to be resold.
The streaming service secured the rights to Serie A in July in a three-year deal, ending BT's six-year association with Italy's top league. In May, Eleven Sports struck a three-year deal with LaLiga, ending Sky's 20-year association with Spain's top flight.
Eleven Sports has attracted only about 50,000 subscriptions since its UK launch in August, according to the Telegraph, which broke the news of the streaming service's difficulties. Eleven Sports charges £5.99 (S$10.40) a month. Rival sports streaming service Dazn, which is owned by the Warner Music owner and Spotify investor Len Blavatnik, has said it will not launch in the UK because the market is too competitive.
Eleven Sports, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
In April, the London offices of IMG and MP & Silva, the sports rights agency co-founded by Radrizzani, were raided by officials from the European Commission investigating potential sports rights cartels.

While participation by girls in sports has increased at all levels (Olympic, professional, college and high school, and youth) and society is more accepting than ever of female athleticism, the fact that girls continue to drop out of sports at six times the rate of boys is an indication that we still have a long way to go as a society in reaching the goal of gender equality in sports.

Football: Careless United undone by Messi double as Barca cruise into semis

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messi pounced on two Manchester United mistakes to score twice and end their hopes of another Camp Nou comeback as Barcelona breezed into the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday (April 16).
After an excellent start, United were undone twice in four minutes by Messi, who first nicked the ball off the careless Ashley Young and then watched as a weak shot from distance squirmed underneath David de Gea.
Philippe Coutinho, in perhaps his best performance of the season, added a third with a curling effort into the top corner and by the end, an outclassed United might have been relieved the score was not more traumatic than 3-0, 4-0 on aggregate.
A dizzying opening spell, in which Marcus Rashford had hit the crossbar, was long-forgotten, even if it could offer Barcelona's next opponents some encouragement.
Liverpool, who take a 2-0 lead to Porto on Wednesday, are the most likely obstacle between Barca and their first Champions League final since they last won this tournament in 2015. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane might feel encouraged.
Instead, United's pair of early errors made this another night about Messi and ensured any faint hopes of repeating the comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, or even the famous 1999 rescue act against Bayern Munich, on this same pitch, were dashed.
Messi now has his 109th and 110th Champions League goals and, potentially, three extra matches to reduce the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo's 126, after Juventus were dumped out by Ajax. Barcelona's fans celebrated that too.
United's coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had urged his strikers to be more lethal here but it felt ominous that even before kick-off, Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez had hit 42 goals this season, while Messi on his own had 43.
Around an hour before kick-off, Alex Ferguson was on the side of the pitch, shaking hands with Ryan Giggs and sharing words with Solskjaer, the scorer of that goal against Munich here 20 years ago.
They could have hardly have asked for a better start. United were brilliant for eight minutes and could have been ahead within 30 seconds as Rashford raced onto a curving Paul Pogba pass and toed away a shot, which Marc-Andre ter Stegen bravely left to graze his own crossbar.

Magic Messi

Barca were flustered, so much so the crowd even cheered with relief when Arthur Melo played his team's first convincing pass.
Then, Barcelona had their own eight-minute flurry as United almost conceded a penalty, ruled out after Fred took the ball before bringing down Ivan Rakitic, and then did concede, twice, to Messi.
Both could have been avoided, even if Young's turn on the edge of his own box was punished in devastating fashion. Young lunged in to atone for his mistake but Messi skipped away from him, poked it through Fred's legs and then whipped the ball past into the corner.
The second was simpler. Fred and Scott McTominay closed in on Coutinho and the ball spilled out to Messi, whose dribbling shot with his right foot should have drawn a routine save. Instead, De Gea let is squirm under his body for 2-0.
Pogba lashed out at the increasingly influential Arthur and Barca could have had a third before half-time, De Gea scrambling across to save on the line when Sergi Roberto should have finished.
Messi could have had his hat-trick too after Luis Suarez found him with a superb cutback and there was an almost comical sequence in the second half when the Argentinian played with his United chasers before finally being bundled over by McTominay.
Rashford might have made it interesting if he had controlled Pogba's ball over the top but Barcelona were in exhibition mode, helped by a vintage Coutinho curler after he had cut inside from the left.
Messi even attempted a bicycle kick and there were celebrations from the home fans when news went round that Ajax had taken the lead in Turin. They believe this is their year.
