Football: Baihakki gets fresh shot at Thai top tier

Less than three weeks before he turns 35 on Jan 31, national defender Baihakki Khaizan is counting his blessings after he signed a one-year contract with Thai League 1 side Trat FC on Friday.
The 1.89-metre centre-back moves from Thai giants Muangthong United and is looking forward to playing in the top tier after being sent on loan to Thai League 2 side Udon Thani, where he played in 23 league games and scored one goal as they finished sixth last season.
Trat were also in the second division, but were promoted after finishing second behind PTT Rayong. The White Elephants play in the 6,000-seater Thai Province Stadium and are based in the coastal province of Trat, an hour's flight from Bangkok.
Baihakki told The Straits Times: "While I enjoyed myself at Udon Thani, I was disappointed at being loaned out to the second division as my mission was to play in T1.
"After a year of patience, I'm finally here and I hope to achieve something together with Trat. We may be a newly promoted team, but Trat have a decent squad and made some good signings.
"We take inspiration from Prachuap, who were promoted and finished sixth in T1 last season. Sure, there are giants like Buriram, Bangkok United and Muangthong, but T1 is also an exciting and unpredictable league, and we look forward to surprising people."
He has been one of Singapore's most travelled Lions in recent years, after winning the 2003 S-League Young Player of the Year award in his debut season with Geylang United.
From 2009 to 2012, he played for three big Indonesian clubs - Persija Jakarta, Persib Bandung and Medan Chiefs. Upon his return to Singapore, he won the Malaysian Super League with the LionsXII in 2013 before signing with Johor Darul Takzim the following year.

RARING TO GO
After a year of patience, I'm finally here and I hope to achieve something together with Trat.
BAIHAKKI KHAIZAN, 34-year-old Singapore defender, on his latest challenge.

He played for Warriors FC in the S-League for a season in 2017 before moving to Thailand last year. Singapore Premier League side Hougang United had been keen to sign him to beef up their defence, but he decided to go for a bigger challenge and pay packet overseas.
"I appreciate the interest from Hougang, and they gave me a good headache," said Baihakki.
"People assume many negative things about 35-year-old players but I feel I can still keep up with the modern game and go on, and I am thankful for teams who recognise and value my abilities.
"Nobody knows whether such an offer from a top-tier Thai side will come again, it could be my last chance and I must make full use of this to prove my worth."
Having played only 23 minutes in Singapore's failed AFF Suzuki Cup campaign in November, he hopes to add to his 134 caps after the Lions appoint their new head coach by next month. "It is always an honour to wear the national jersey, and I'm always available. But each coach has his own thinking so for now I can focus only on doing my best for Trat," he said.
Baihakki's deal means there are now four Singaporean footballers playing in Thailand, with Army United goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, Nong Bua Pitchaya custodian Izwan Mahbud and Bangkok Glass defender Irfan Fandi all in T2.
Over in Malaysia, national skipper and midfielder Hariss Harun continues to captain MSL champions JDT after signing a contract extension in October that keeps him at the club until 2021, and utility player Safuwan Baharudin is set to stay with FA Cup winners Pahang.
Defender Shakir Hamzah is a new addition to Kedah, who are under Singaporean coach Aidil Sharin, while winger Faris Ramli has joined second-division side Perlis from top-tier team PKNS FC.
Ikhsan Fandi is the only Lion in Europe, having signed a two-year deal with Norwegian second-tier side Raufoss on Saturday.

Football: Juventus not just Ronaldo, says Atletico coach Simeone

TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone warned on Monday (March 11) that there was more to Juventus than striker Cristiano Ronaldo as the Spanish side look to "seize their opportunity" in Turin and maintain their push for a first Champions League title.
Simeone's side take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their last 16 clash with Juve at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday (March 12), and are clear favourites to make the quarter-finals at the expense of a team who signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer with the goal of winning the Champions League for the first time since 1996.
"You can't just talk about Ronaldo, Juventus are a great team with top players who are used to fighting important battles and are very strong in defence," said Simeone, who insisted there were no favourites despite his team's clear advantage.
"These are two different matches, the first leg and second leg. We'll have to seize all the opportunities and do our best, we'll have less space than in the first leg.
"These are two strong teams, one will go through and the other won't. It's hard to talk about there being favourites." Atletico have injury worries but Simeone said central defender Diego Godin was fit to play.
"Godin is fine, he'll train today and I expect him to play tomorrow. I'll make do with what I have at my disposal," he said.
Reigning European champions Real Madrid have already crashed out of the competition, with Zinedine Zidane returning as coach of the stumbling Spanish giants.
But Simeone refused to comment on the Frenchman's return to the Santiago Bernabeu just over nine months after he resigned.
"With all the respect I have for him I don't think its right to talk about Zidane before a match between Atletico and Juventus," said the former Argentina midfielder, who played for Juve's hated rivals Inter Milan during his six-year spell as a player in Italy.
Midfielder Koke warned they were ready for a "battle" with Juventus, who are dominant in Italy but have struggled to turn domestic success into European glory.
"Anything could happen in the Champions League, a lot will depend on how we start the game," the Spain international said.
"They will certainly attack in every possible way, we're ready to do battle.
"We know that we are facing a great team. We played very well at the Wanda Metropolitano and come here convinced we can put in a similar performance, but have to give our all."

City want to co-own team in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR • The owners of Premier League champions Manchester City are eyeing a stake in a Malaysian team to add to their portfolio of clubs, a Malaysian sports official revealed yesterday.
Ferran Soriano, chief executive officer of the City Football Group (CFG), bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour of the Abu Dhabi royal family, raised the possibility when he met Sports Minister Syed Saddiq in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
CFG already own or have stakes in Major League Soccer outfit New York City, A-League team Melbourne City, J-League side Yokohama F Marinos, Uruguay's Atletico Torque, recently-relegated Spanish team Girona and Chinese side Sichuan Jiuniu, as well as City, who are fresh off winning an unprecedented domestic treble in England.
Ahmad Shapawi Ismai, the director-general of Malaysia's national sports council, revealed to Agence France-Presse that he was "delighted and excited" at the news that CFG "are looking at the possibility of co-owning a Malaysian club as we need (their) expertise".
While Soriano did not reveal the club that the group was interested in buying, Mr Syed said CFG would be meeting some presidents of local clubs soon, and he wanted them to make Malaysia "their base in South-east Asia".
At the meeting, the Spaniard claimed he saw great possibilities in the country, adding: "We see Malaysia has an opportunity for football... the level of enthusiasm of the fans is obvious. The development of Malaysian football and the league in the last year with investment by the government shows there's great opportunity."
Malaysia is the latest Asian country being considered by CFG - in March, Soriano expressed interest in investing in a club from India.

Neymar faces ban over fan altercation

Neymar faces ban over fan altercation

PARIS • Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar is facing a lengthy suspension from the French Football Federation after he was filmed hitting a fan shouting abuse as the team filed up to collect their French Cup runners-up medals on Saturday.
A 28-year-old supporter from Nantes had been filming the players and mocking them as "worthless" when the forward, who was clearly incensed, grabbed the hand holding the mobile phone and shoved it towards the fan's face.
While authorities have yet to determine what action he will face, French broadcaster RMC have reported that he is looking at a ban of between five and eight matches.
The incident has capped a miserable few days for the world's most expensive player at €222 million (S$338.9 million).
Last Friday, Uefa slapped a three-match European football ban on Neymar after his foul-mouthed tirade at officials following PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat by Manchester United.
The shock French Cup loss to Rennes, going out 6-5 on penalties after the final ended in a 2-2 draw, also meant that the cash-rich French champions have missed out on multiple trophies for the first time since 2013.
Neymar has since defended his reaction on his Instagram page, admitting that though he "acted badly, no one can stay indifferent".
However, his transgressions have gone down like a lead balloon with both PSG coach Thomas Tuchel and the Brazilian media.
Asked about the scuffle, the German coach blasted: "I don't like it. You can't do that, you just can't do that. It's not easy to go up the steps after a defeat. It's very difficult for me, for everybody, but we have to accept it.
"If we lose, we have to show respect. You can't get into a fight with a spectator."
Media back home, including daily Folha and website Terra, also took on a similar tone, branding the Brazil international a "coward" and "rebellious adolescent" and "appears incapable of dealing with criticism, of dealing with frustrations".

Football: Toffees aim to start new year on winning note

LONDON • With two losses and three draws in the Premier League, Goodison Park has not exactly been a fortress this season, much to Jordan Pickford's chagrin.
Everton also have just one win in their last seven league games, but the goalkeeper has demanded they "get that (winning) momentum going", starting with Leicester today.
Urging his teammates to arrest a three-game winless home run, he said on the Everton website: "Leicester is another tough game and it comes less than 70 hours after we finished at Brighton, but our target is to get the three points.
"If we get that result, it will spark a good start to the new year. We did not get the result we wanted to finish off 2018, but that is football and we have another game to turn it around in a short space of time.
"Yes (we have goals in the side) but we couldn't get that one against Brighton (losing 1-0 on Saturday).
"We work hard and we have a lot of depth in our squad and hopefully, those things will help us achieve the win."
Like the Toffees, the Foxes are no model of consistency after crashing back down to earth following their last-minute 1-0 league loss at home to Cardiff at the weekend.
The manner of the loss was bitterly disappointing for the King Power faithful as it had come on the back of two impressive league wins in succession over Chelsea and champions Manchester City.
But Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy told his teammates on the club website to "stay focused" and put that upset to the back of their minds ahead of their trip to Merseyside as they had "a big game against Everton".

Bayern won't splash out for big squad revamp

MUNICH • Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness had called their summer transfer window "the biggest investment programme in our history" after splashing out a combined €115 million (S$177.1 million) for France defenders Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.
But, after sealing their seventh successive German Bundesliga title and their 29th overall with a 5-1 home thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, he declared that the club were not planning to break their transfer record again.
The Bavarian giants had been expected to surpass the club-record €80 million fee paid to Atletico Madrid for Hernandez as they set about a major squad overhaul ahead of next season, with veterans Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben leaving in the close season on free transfers.
RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt and Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel have been linked to the club in recent months.
However, Hoeness is not prepared to make any more big-money moves as "we are not playing monopoly here".
The former West Germany forward said: "We are a football club. We have reached the 80 million mark, and I don't think we will go beyond that."
There will still be new faces, though, just not on the scale of the Hernandez and Pavard transfers, with Hoeness promising to "certainly not stop making changes to our team and will continue with the overhaul".
Chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has set his sights on a new winger, telling German daily Bild "we need another good alternative beside Alphonso Davies because we are losing Robben and Ribery".
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi remains on the club's radar, having made four unsuccessful bids for the 18-year-old in the January transfer window, and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic will be "active again" after this weekend's German Cup final.
Having secured the title, Bayern hope to complete a fifth domestic double since 2010 when they face RB Leipzig on Saturday but, regardless of the result, coach Niko Kovac feels his job is safe despite having come under pressure this season.
After being drenched in wheat beer during Bayern's customary title celebrations, he told Sky Sports: "I'm convinced that I will continue. I am working on the assumption that I will fulfil the remaining two years of my contract.
"It has been an exhausting year, you can probably see that in my beard and my hair."
Reports last week suggested the Croat would be shown the door even if he won the double.
