Football: Solid and smart Bayern hold Liverpool at Anfield in Champions League

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Bayern Munich showed all their Champions League experience and quality organisation as they held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their last 16 match at Anfield on Tuesday (Feb 19).
The result leaves it all to play for in the second leg in Munich on March 13, although the German side will be without defender Joshua Kimmich who will be suspended after picking up a yellow card.
It is no accident that Bayern have reached the semi-finals of this competition in six of the last seven seasons and they showed their pragmatic calmness to subdue Liverpool's normally lively front three.
Mohamed Salah, the man Liverpool look to for moments of inspiration, to create a goal out of nothing, had a night to forget with one of his poorest displays in this competition.
Liverpool simply could not find the fluency and rhythm that brings the best out of their forward line although they will be pleased, in the absence of their defensive rock Virgil van Dijk, to have kept out Bayern.
There were few clear-cut chances in the game although Liverpool created several half-openings in the first period.
The first was one of the best they managed - Jordan Henderson looking for Salah, who had snuck in behind Niklas Sule, but the Egyptian's toe-poke at full stretch was straight at Manuel Neuer.
At the other end, their goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to be alert to keep out a mis-hit clearance from Joel Matip that hit him in the chest.
Kingsley Coman fired into the side-netting after a sloppy give away from Alisson but that was a rare sign of jitters from either defence.
Bayern were content to sit deep after the break and the closest Juergen Klopp's side came in the second half was a diving header from Sadio Mane in the 86th minute which Neuer pushed around the post.
This was not a night that will go in the list of great European encounters at Anfield, a fact reflected in a rather flat atmosphere for much of the game, but Liverpool know they still have a chance to progress.
"You're playing an experienced team. They've been here and done it for five or six years," said left back Andy Robertson.
"We've kept a clean sheet, could've scored a couple of goals but the tie is well and truly alive. If we score there it's crucial."

Football: Newcastle get extra-time win over Blackburn, Stoke fall to Shrewsbury in FA Cup 3rd-round replays

Football: Newcastle get extra-time win over Blackburn, Stoke fall to Shrewsbury in FA Cup 3rd-round replays

LONDON (REUTERS) - Newcastle beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 after extra time, while Championship side Stoke City threw away a two-goal lead as they suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat by third-tier Shrewsbury Town in English FA Cup third-round replays on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Newcastle fans, who had seen their side narrowly escape defeat in the home match with Championship team Blackburn, were given some respite from their top-flight struggles with a replay win against their fellow six-time FA Cup winners at Ewood Park.
Rafa Benitez's much-changed side with a youthful streak had looked set to coast through when Sean Longstaff's deflected shot put them ahead after 56 seconds and Callum Roberts volleyed home a second four years since his only other Newcastle appearance.
But Blackburn hit back through Adam Armstrong, a former Newcastle player and lifelong fan of the Magpies, and Darragh Lenihan's header before half-time.
When the tie went into extra time, Bradley Dack missed a great chance to put Blackburn ahead before goals from Joselu, who should have been ruled offside, and Ayoze Perez earned Newcastle a home tie with fellow top-flight side Watford.
Benitez praised his team's commitment but was left counting the cost of the victory with defenders Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles suffering injuries.
There appeared no hope that Shrewsbury, 18th in League One, would follow the third-round giant-killings that had been dished out by Newport County, Oldham Athletic and Barnet, but against the odds they were the latest underdogs to snarl.
Tyrese Campbell, son of former Everton striker Kevin, scored twice in the first half for second-tier Stoke but three goals in the last 20 minutes for the Shrews served up another surprise.
James Bolton's 20m strike began the fightback in the 71st minute before a penalty from Fejiri Okenabirhie and an 81st-minute shot from Josh Laurent completed the fightback.
It earned Shrewsbury a glamour fourth-round home tie with their neighbours, Premier League outfit Wolves.
In Tuesday's other replay, struggling Championship team Sheffield Wednesday came through another tough test at in-form third-tier side Luton Town, winning 1-0 with an Atdhe Nuhiu goal straight after the interval.
The Owls' reward is a fourth-round trip to Premier League giants Chelsea.

Football: Real Madrid ease past Al Ain for fourth Club World Cup title

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Real Madrid lifted the Fifa Club World Cup for a record fourth time on Saturday (Dec 22) after thrashing local side Al Ain 4-1 in the final in Abu Dhabi with the help of impressive distance strikes in either half from midfielders Luka Modric and Marcos Llorente.
Recently crowned Ballon d'Or winner Modric took one touch before thumping the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box to break the deadlock in the 14th minute after Al Ain had missed two early chances to take a shock lead.
Madrid's home-grown midfielder Marcos Llorente doubled the European champions' lead on the hour-mark with a superbly struck volley from outside the area.
Real captain Sergio Ramos grabbed his side's third goal with a powerful header from a corner before Al Ain, who shocked South American champions River Plate in the semi-finals, got a late consolation goal through Japanese defender Tsukasa Shiotani.
Madrid substitute Vinicius Jr. burst through in stoppage time and fired in a shot which defender Yahia Nader diverted into his own net.
Real have won the last three editions of the tournament, also lifting the trophy in 2014, and moved ahead of Barcelona as the team to have won it the most times.
"We're very happy, these players deserve this," said Real coach Santiago Solari after winning his first piece of silverware since replacing Julen Lopetegui in the dugout in October.
"This is the icing on the cake of winning the Champions League three years in a row. It's a great feat for the club, this group and the other coaches, and we can't forget we're here thanks to the work of Zinedine Zidane. It's going to be difficult for any team to do what this side has done."
Al Ain coach Zoran Mamic said Real were far too good for his side despite creating those early chances which forward Hussein El Shahat squandered, missing the target with one effort and seeing Ramos clear his shot off the line moments later.
"We have to congratulate Real Madrid because they won this game deservedly, by playing good football, and we couldn't compete with them," said the Croatian.
"It's the fourth game we've played in only a few days and it has taken its toll on us, but we have had a great tournament. No-one expected us to get to this point."

Football: Morata at the double for FA Cup holders Chelsea as Gillingham knock out Cardiff

LONDON (AFP) - Alvaro Morata scored twice as holders Chelsea began their FA Cup defence with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in a match where a tearful Cesc Fabregas appeared to bid farewell to English football.
The third round is the stage where top-flight clubs enter the world’s oldest senior knockout football tournament and has traditionally been associated with upsets.
But there was only one "giant-killing" on Saturday (Jan 5) with third-tier Gillingham beating Premier League Cardiff 1-0.
Championship side Bristol City defeated top flight basement club Huddersfield by the same score thanks to Josh Brownhill’s 72nd-minute goal and Crystal Palace left it late to see off fourth-tier Grimsby 1-0.
Meanwhile, second division Derby, managed by former England midfielder Frank Lampard, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Southampton.
Newcastle were also held to a draw, a Matt Ritchie penalty five minutes from time ensuring a 1-1 result against Championship club Blackburn.
But Arsenal, the record 13-times FA Cup winners, won 3-0 at Blackpool.
Both Morata and Fabregas have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window – the latter is reportedly set to join a Monaco side managed by former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry.
Captain for the day Fabregas saw his poor 30th-minute penalty saved by Luke Steele but two goals in the space of 10 minutes in the second half from the previously misfiring Morata, settled the tie.

‘Fantastic Cesc’

Chelsea coach Carlo Cudicini, taking press questions instead of manager Mauricio Sarri, was uncertain when asked if Fabregas had played his last game for the Blues.
“I personally don’t know,” he said.
“He (Fabregas) has been fantastic for the teams he played for before us and the contribution he has given to this club and to this team has been amazing. Cesc is a top, top player.”
Cardiff conceded eight minutes from time when midfielder Elliott List scored for south-east club Gillingham.
“We wouldn’t have scored in a million years,” admitted Neil Warnock, the Cardiff manager.
Delighted Gills boss Steve Lowell, born in Swansea – Cardiff’s arch Welsh rivals – added: “I haven’t played against many Premiership teams before so it’s got to be the best, hasn’t it? It’s a great result.”
Southampton were cruising following Nathan Redmond goals early in each half but Derby hit back with two in quick succession after the hour mark through Jack Marriott and Tom Lawrence.
Everton eventually saw off fourth-tier Lincoln 2-1 at Goodison Park as Ademola Lookman and Bernard put the Toffees 2-0 up by the 14th minute but the hosts pulled a goal back in the 28th minute with Michael Bostwick’s effort.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed a fifth successive win since becoming interim manager of Manchester United following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho with a 2-0 win over Reading.
United, last season’s losing finalists, scored twice before half-time, through Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku.
“You can’t ask for more than going through but the way we played wasn’t the best,” Solskjaer told the BBC.
Marko Arnautovic helped West Ham beat Championship club Birmingham 2-0 scoring in the second minute but was substituted after 19 minutes by manager Manuel Pellegrini.
“He felt a pain in his back at the beginning,” said Pellegrini. “He wanted to continue after that, but it was not good to take a risk.”
Andy Carroll, the man who replaced Arnautovic, made it 2-0 in the 90th minute with his first goal since April.
Elsewhere, an all-Premier League clash saw Brighton win 3-1 away to south coast rivals Bournemouth.
Premier League strugglers Burnley needed a late penalty from Chris Wood to see off third-tier Barnsley 1-0.

Bizarre build up

Arsenal had a bizarre build-up to their tie when a Blackpool fan climbed onto the roof of the coach taking the squad to Bloomfield Road.
Eventually, after being spoken to by police officers, the man came down off the roof after some 40 minutes before he was arrested.
Joel Willock, one of four teenagers in Arsenal’s side, scored twice before half-time, with Alex Iwobi added a third goal late on.
“We imposed our quality on the game and it was good to see the young players do well today as well,” said Arsenal manager Unai Emery after his FA Cup debut.
League One leaders Portsmouth, the 2008 FA Cup winners, needed an Andre Green stoppage-time goal in a 1-0 victory away to Championship high-flyers Norwich, down to 10 men after Grant Haley’s early red card.
Liverpool, the Premier League leaders, play Wolves at Anfield on Monday.
Tottenham Hotspur became the first club into the fourth round this season with a 7-0 rout of fourth-tier Tranmere on Friday.

Football: We might need 105 points to win EPL title, says Liverpool boss Klopp

Football: We might need 105 points to win EPL title, says Liverpool boss Klopp

WOLVERHAMPTON (REUTERS) - Jurgen Klopp said his Liverpool side may need to surpass Manchester City's record points total to win the Premier League after a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (Dec 21) guaranteed them top spot at Christmas.
Goals by Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were enough to take Liverpool four points clear of champions Manchester City who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Liverpool, who have topped the Premier League table on three previous occasions without winning the title, have 48 points from 18 games and only two teams - Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season - have had more points at that stage.
City won the title last season with a record 100 points but such has been the pace at the top this season that Klopp believes even more might be needed this time.
"Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league, but was it ever such a tight race?" Klopp said.
"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.
"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win, then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points from one down to five.
"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know!" he added.
Tottenham Hotspur, in third place, have 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea are on 37 before their home clash with Leicester City.
Liverpool's title challenge has been built on a rock-solid defence which has been breached only seven times in the League so far this season with Van Dijk outstanding.
The Dutchman even proved effective at the other end of the pitch on a rainy night in the Midlands as he scored his first Premier League goal to double Liverpool's lead.
"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," Van Dijk said.
"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I'm more focused on winning games."

Football: Valencia to face Barca in Copa final after seeing off Betis

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Valencia set up a Copa del Rey showdown with Barcelona as they reached the final for the first time in 11 years by beating Real Betis 1-0 at a bouncing Mestalla on Thursday (Feb 28) where a second-half Rodrigo Moreno strike gave them a 3-2 aggregate win.
Valencia, who lifted the trophy on their last appearance in the showpiece match in 2008, will meet 30-times winners Barca in the final on May 25 at Betis' Benito Villamarin stadium.
Marcelino's side fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg and a goalless home draw would have seen them through on away goals. They appeared set up to absorb the pressure, inviting Betis to have most of the possession.
The visitors had the better of the chances in a tight and tense first period and it took a strong hand from Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech to turn over a shot from Jese, while Betis defender Aissa Mandi headed narrowly wide following a corner.
Valencia showed more ambition after the interval and went ahead with a well worked move in the 56th minute which saw Kevin Gameiro race into the box and slide the ball across for Moreno to comfortably tuck it into the empty net from close range.
That meant Betis needed at least two goals to progress and, while they continued to monopolise the ball, Valencia controlled the space and rarely looked like letting their lead slip.
Barca, who have won the last four editions of the competition, beat Real Madrid 3-0 away on Wednesday for a 4-1 aggregate victory in the other semi-final.

Those in search of a loud and lively atmosphere to watch Sunday morning's (Singapore time) Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham will have several options in Singapore.
The match at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid will be screened live at Our Tampines Hub's (OTH) Town Square, which can seat 5,000.
Admission is free, but is on a first-come-first-served basis from 6.30pm on Saturday, with the first 5,000 receiving a gift. There will be free movie screenings from 7pm to 1am, when the pre-match commentary broadcast will begin.
The game kicks off at 3am.
Should the Town Square reach full capacity, supporters can also catch the live telecast at the Festive Plaza within the Hub.
There will be live entertainment at the Plaza from midnight till 3am, along with fringe activities outside the team sports hall (level two) from midnight till 4am.
More food and beverage outlets at the Hub will be extending their operating hours to complement those that are already operating 24 hours daily. Its hawker centre will also have stalls operating past 3am.
Liverpool fan and full-time national serviceman Timothy Low, 22, lives a five-minute walk from OTH. He plans to attend the screening with five friends, some of whom are Spurs supporters.
"I don't know if we'll be friends after the match," he quipped. "It's good OTH offers free screening because some of my friends don't subscribe to football channels.
"It's a place where my friends and I can watch the match together and shout rather than going to someone's house and not having (that same) atmosphere."
There will also be a free live broadcast of the final at the Sundown Marathon race village at the F1 Pit Building. It is open to the public and those supporting the runners. Randy Tan, general manager of the race organiser Infinitus Productions, said: "We believe in the celebration of sports, be it running or football. We are glad to be able to partner beIN Sports and Singtel TV to bring sports fans together and screen the final."
The official supporters' clubs in Singapore of the English teams are also organising their own sold-out screenings.

Fans are invited to watch the Champions League final on the giant screen at Space by M&S Bank Arena, The Auditorium Liverpool and the convention centre, on Saturday June 1. The screening, which is in association with BT Sport, the exclusive live broadcaster of the competition in the UK, will show
