Football: Improved Denis Suarez ready to make impact, say Unai Emery

LONDON • With Granit Xhaka facing a late fitness test and Lucas Torreira suspended, Unai Emery has challenged Denis Suarez to finally make an impact in Arsenal's bid to climb back into the Premier League's top four.
Suarez has struggled since his January loan move from Barcelona and the Spanish midfielder is yet to make a competitive start for the Gunners.
But a series of impressive displays at Arsenal's recent training camp in Dubai could earn the 25-year-old a place in the starting line-up against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium today (tomorrow morning, Singapore time).
Suarez played the full 90 minutes and created a goal for Carl Jenkinson in Arsenal 3-2 friendly victory over Al Nasr.
Arsenal boss Emery is encouraged by Suarez's timely improvement, saying: "He is okay for starting in the first XI, to give us this impact. We are going to need everybody, every player for the next matches.
"We decided to go away to train for four days and play a match in Dubai. But it's the same idea, the same spirit."
Emery was keen to work with Suarez again after signing him on loan at Sevilla in 2014-15.
Asked about the time it had taken Suarez to settle in north London, Emery added: "It's normal. Now we have a lot of players ready, with a big mentality and with a big performance to play and help us."
Beating Newcastle would give Arsenal a 10th successive home league win, equalling a run they last enjoyed in the 1997-98 season in Arsene Wenger's first full campaign as manager.
A victory is essential after Arsenal dropped to fifth place on Saturday as a result of Manchester United's 2-1 win over Watford.
Emery's men are one point behind United and can't afford to drop points as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish or winning the Europa League.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has warned his players not to ease up as they inch closer to guaranteeing their safety.
The Magpies are seven points above the bottom three and their 35-point total is just three short of the number Benitez believes will be enough to stay up.
Newcastle have lost only one of their last six league games, but Benitez is taking nothing for granted.
"If you see what Arsenal are doing, they are doing really well, so we cannot expect that it will be an easy game," the Spaniard said.
"We have now 35 and we are fine, but still we have to win. The next game is the most important for us, it's like a final for us and I don't think about what the others will do."

Women's team suing US Soccer for gender-pay disparity

Women's team suing US Soccer for gender-pay disparity

NEW YORK • They work just as hard as men for less pay and are told they need to generate as much money as men do if they want to get paid as much as men are paid.
When they say that's essentially impossible without more opportunities and promotion, they are told that opportunity and promotion will happen once they start producing more money.
This is the narrative at the heart of the gender discrimination lawsuit the United States women's national football team filed on Friday against the sport's national governing body, US Soccer.
In nearly every sport, gender disparities in pay and working conditions are rampant.
Coming just three months before the start of the Women's World Cup in France, the litigation immediately became the central plot for the event and highlighted an issue that has increasingly rankled the sports world.
The National Basketball Association's minimum salary of US$1.35 million (S$1.8 million) for a player with one year of experience is higher than the salary cap for an entire Women's NBA roster.
For all the gains that women have made in golf, the disparity in purses between the women of the LPGA Tour and the men of the PGA Tour continues to be striking.
Last year, the women's leading money winner, Thai Ariya Jutanugarn, won three events, including the US Women's Open, but her on-course earnings of US$2.74 million were surpassed by 33 players on the PGA Tour, including 33rd-ranked American Chesson Hadley, who did not record a victory on his way to US$2.76 million.
In tennis, women have pulled closer to pay equality than in any other major sport, with equal pay in the Grand Slams.
But a closer look at the scoreboard each year still shows women in the top 100 generally making only about 80 per cent of the prize money male players make, because of lower pay at other tournaments.
"Unless the origin of the sport is anchored in women, like gymnastics or field hockey, I don't think there's a culture that starts with the premise (that) women are going to be treated equally," said Donna Lopiano, a sports management consultant and former University of Texas athletics administrator.
According to the lawsuit against US Soccer, differing systems of compensation have led to the women repeatedly earning less than their male counterparts, even though the women's team are the world champions while the men failed to reach last year's World Cup in Russia.
And adidas have thrown its weight behind equitable treatment, pledging to pay players it sponsors from the winning Women's World Cup team equal performance bonuses as their male peers.
"We believe in inspiring and enabling the next generation of female athletes, creators and leaders through breaking barriers," the German sportswear giant tweeted the same day the lawsuit was filed.

City slip up at Leicester

City slip up at Leicester

LONDON • Manager Jurgen Klopp insisted there is "no extra pressure" as Premier League leaders Liverpool head into the second half of the season.
Instead it was the English champions Manchester City who felt the pressure and lost further ground yesterday.
The Reds comfortably beat Newcastle 4-0 at home with goals from Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah (penalty), Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho and they now have a six-point lead at the top of the table.
City, meanwhile, suffered their second straight league defeat with a 2-1 loss at Leicester. This also meant that they dropped to third on 44 points.
Liverpool lead the standings on 51 points, while Tottenham, who beat Bournemouth 5-0, leapfrogged City into second on 45 points.
Pep Guardiola's City side had led through Bernardo Silva, only for Marc Albrighton and Ricardo Pereira to clinch all three points for Leicester at the King Power Stadium.
Spurs, meanwhile, had a convincing win with goals coming from Son Heung-min (two), Christian Eriksen, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane.

Premier League games Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has scored in this season, more than any other player.

Elsewhere, sixth-placed Manchester United defeated Huddersfield 3-1 at home. Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba (two) netted as interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to a hero's welcome in his first match in charge at Old Trafford. The Norwegian has now won two straight games.
In the first Boxing Day match that kicked off yesterday, promoted sides Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers locked horns at Craven Cottage with the clash ending 1-1.
Ryan Sessegnon scored for the home side in the 74th minute before Romain Saiss equalised for Wolves just 11 minutes later.
Claudio Ranieri, who won the league title with Leicester in 2015-16, was appointed as Fulham's manager last month but he has since clinched only one win in seven matches as the Cottagers remain stuck in the relegation zone.
"We created more than them, they found the solution but I am satisfied with our performance," the 67-year-old Italian said.
"We are stronger than this and want to react in every match. We must continue to fight and train well."

Football: Sarri worried about Chelsea's 'mental block'

Football: Sarri worried about Chelsea's 'mental block'

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has accused his side of switching off mentally as Chelsea provided Everton's first top-six scalp in 26 games, a run dating back to January 2017.
Speaking after their 2-0 Premier League loss at Goodison Park on Sunday, the Italian also expressed his fears that a top-four place may be beyond his team if he cannot rectify their "mental block".
He said: "At the moment this is our limit. In my opinion, the first 45 minutes were the best we have played all season, then in the second half, we stopped playing.
"We forgot how to defend, forgot how to counter-attack and that is a problem for us, because even if you don't score, you have to stay in the match."
Chelsea, who have now failed to score in eight of 30 league games, could have been three or four goals up at half-time, and Sarri was perplexed by the collective drop in standards that saw Everton take control of the game after the break.
"We were good up to the last minute of the first half and bad from the first minute of the second," the Blues manager said.
"I'm worried about our mentality, the situation is clear. We were in control of the game, all we had to do was continue, and we could not do that.

  • Premier League talking points

  • 1 MADDISON STARS FROM THE WING
Brendan Rodgers has not yet been at Leicester for three weeks, but suffice to say, he was not surprised when James Maddison opened the scoring at Burnley with an inch-perfect free kick.
With the manager hailing him as a "top-level player" before describing his ability at set pieces as "not by accident", the midfielder's efforts were all the more admirable as illness kept him up on Friday night. The 22-year-old also showed his adaptability at Turf Moor, excelling at finding space when cutting infield from his new role on the left.
    2 CHICHARITO THE GAME CHANGER
The joys of Javier Hernandez have been well documented over the years - he can score goals inside the penalty box and little else.
Some managers have become frustrated with his limitations, meaning he struggled to be a regular at Manchester United and now West Ham.
But the Mexico striker, more commonly known as Chicharito, showed his worth as the focal point of the attack, with his brace against Huddersfield changing the dynamic of the game for the hosts.
3 NEWCASTLE POUNCE IN STOPPAGE TIME
Rafael Benitez has moulded his Newcastle side into one of the most committed in the league and their never-say-die attitude was reinforced at Bournemouth when they scored a goal in added time in both halves.
Salomon Rondon's free-kick goal was the result of a counter-attack from a corner when many other teams would have been happy just to clear the ball at that stage.
Matt Ritchie then smashed in their second to equalise moments before the final whistle, a testament to the battling qualities that should keep the Magpies up.
    THE GUARDIAN

"It's very difficult for players to explain to me the change. Very difficult for me to explain to you the change.
"If you are asking me about the top four, I would say it depends on whether you are speaking about the first half or the second.
"It will be hard to reach the top four now, but I would not say impossible.
"If we can play like we did in the first half for eight matches, we will give ourselves a chance."
His opposite number Marco Silva was, however, delighted his players had "showed our real selves" in the second half.
The Portuguese also accepted Everton found the initial stages tough going, but played down his role in his team later producing a performance of far greater intensity.
Richarlison opened the scoring in the 49th minute before Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked home the rebound in the 72nd minute after his penalty kick was saved.
The Toffees manager said: "What I said at the interval was simple. I said, in the second half, we just have to do everything different."
Asked about the statistic that Everton's last victory over a "Big Six" opponent came under Ronald Koeman against Manchester City, Silva claimed to be unaware.
He added: "I didn't know it had been so long, but all I want to say is that it cannot happen again. This is too big a club for that to happen."
Separately, Chelsea have lodged an official complaint with Uefa after forward Callum Hudson-Odoi was allegedly subjected to racist abuse late on during their Europa League last-16 victory at Dynamo Kiev last week.
He was apparently on the receiving end of monkey chants close to the final whistle and European football's governing body will be expected to launch a formal probe.
"We wholeheartedly condemn such abhorrent behaviour," a Chelsea spokesman said.

Football: Wood helps Burnley earn win at Brighton to move clear of bottom three

LONDON (REUTERS) - A double from Chris Wood helped Burnley earn a 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (Feb 9), a win that steered Burnley three points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Burnley came into the contest at the Amex Stadium unbeaten in the league in 2019, and the visitors could have taken the lead in the 17th minute, only to be denied by the crossbar twice in quick succession.
They did not have to wait long for the opener, though, with Wood capitalising on a slip from Brighton's Lewis Dunk before firing home in the 26th minute.
Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton was once again in inspired form for the visitors, time and again denying Brighton with some fine stops.
Down the other end, Brighton keeper Mat Ryan got a hand to Wood's curling effort in the 61st minute, but could not keep it out.
Ashley Barnes then earned his side a penalty, which he duly dispatched in the 74th minute before Shane Duffy headed in two minutes later to give Brighton hope.
The visitors held on and are now three points clear of the bottom three in 15th, level on points with Brighton, who dropped to 14th in the table and are without a league win since Dec 29.
"We knew it was going to be tough," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said. "But we've had four out of six away games and have come away with eight points which is a good tally in the Premier League."
Heaton was immediately called into action for an unchanged Burnley, making two saves inside the first four minutes, with his stop from Pascal Gross especially impressive.
The crossbar then twice kept out Burnley, with Dwight McNeil's deflected cross coming out to Barnes, who again headed onto the frame of the goal.
That opener was forthcoming, as Wood raced clear after Duffy's slip before firing into the roof of the net, moments after Heaton had again made a fine stop.
"I'm certainly enjoying it at the moment," Heaton said. "So I'll keep working hard and hopefully I can keep going well."
Brighton almost got back into it just after the hour mark, only to be denied by Heaton once more, before Wood doubled Burnley's lead.
Barnes won and coolly converted his side's third before Duffy's consolation, as Brighton's poor form continued.
"We get out of this bad run by working the way we have done," Brighton manager Chris Hughton said.
"We're still learning."

Football: Modric criticises Ballon d'Or gala snub by Messi, Ronaldo

MADRID (REUTERS) - Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for choosing not to attend this month's ceremony where he was given the award, saying their decision was unfair to fellow players and voters.
Croatian captain Modric, who broke Messi and Ronaldo's decade-long stranglehold on the prestigious prize last month, said in a newspaper interview on Saturday (Dec 15) the pair's absence from the gala in Paris on Dec 3 did not make sense.
"I cannot speak about why someone didn't turn up at an award ceremony, it's their choice. It doesn't make sense, does it? It seems these votes and awards are only significant when they win," the Real Madrid midfielder told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.
"It's unfair to fellow players and voters who have nominated them in the past 10 years, as well as to football and the fans. However, people will act the way they think they should."
Juventus forward Ronaldo came second in the 2018 Ballon d'Or vote behind his old Real team mate Modric, while Messi was fifth, a ranking met with some consternation at both the Argentine's club Barcelona and in the Catalan media.
Modric, who lifted a third successive Champions League title with Real last season and led Croatia to a first-ever World Cup final, said Ronaldo and Messi were still the best two players around but added that it did not mean they should always be named best player each season.
"In my opinion, things are very simple: Ronaldo and Messi are phenomenons who have been dominant in the past 10 years or so. They've been in a league of their own," Modric said.

"But we are talking about a season's accomplishments here and I guess it means something that votes by national team coaches, managers, football legends, journalists and fellow players have produced the same results."
The Croatian also offered the sarcastic suggestion: "If the debate is going to be about how good a particular player is, the only course of action is to award all trophies to Messi and Ronaldo until they retire and scrap the voting."

Football: Brunei DPMM coach hails team's 'big hearts' as they hold Albirex 0-0 to extend unbeaten run

SINGAPORE - Singapore Premier League (SPL) leaders Brunei DPMM extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 games after they held defending champions Albirex Niigata to a goal-less draw on Friday night (May 24).
With most of his players observing the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, DPMM coach Adrian Pennock was happy with the point at the White Swans' Jurong East Stadium home.
"It's a great point," said the former Stoke City assistant manager.
"To come here, fasting or not, is always difficult and we had to dig in. We didn't come here to draw but the (fatigue) caught up with us a bit. Our players showed they had big hearts."
The match pitted the two most in-form players against each other in midfield.
Albirex had skipper Kyoga Nakamura, the SPL's best young player last month, while DPMM boasted Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto, who won the goal and player of the month awards.
But Ricciuto was unable to assert himself on the game because he had his hands full in midfield combating the pass-and-move style of the Japanese side.

As a result, DPMM's Belarusian striker Andrey Varankow - the SPL's leading scorer with 14 goals from 10 games - cut an isolated figure up front.
Nakamura, however, was able to show glimpses of his quality, and was involved in two of the game's brightest moments.
In the 29th minute, the 23-year-old shimmied past two players, before letting rip a fierce shot from outside the box which was tipped over the bar by DPMM goalkeeper Wardun Yussof.
Then, just seconds into the second half, the former Japan Under-17 player intercepted a loose pass in midfield, bore down on goal, and then set up teammate Hiroyoshi Kamata with a golden opportunity.
But Kamata inexplicably slid the ball into the side netting after rounding Wardun.
Albirex stayed in third place on 18 points from 10 games, nine points behind DPMM, who have played one game more.
Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi rued the missed opportunity, saying: "Our players worked very hard, but we dropped two points tonight. Our accuracy was not good enough, and we need to do better."

Liverpool passed another stringent test of their Premier League title credentials as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk gave them a 2-0 victory at Wolverhampton on Friday that guarantees top spot at Christmas. Salah's 11th goal of the season was a classy one and helped subdue a dangerous Wolves side who had made a lively start.
